Ian is a Partner at the firm. He obtained a Certificate of Taxation of Oil and Gas and International Taxation from Chartered Institute of Taxation, a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Law Development Centre, Uganda and Bachelor of Laws from Makerere University, Uganda. He is a member of the East Africa Law Society and the Uganda Law Society.
He specializes in tax, including Islamic financing and entertainment law. He is currently taking leadership of Islamic Finance Hub, a training center for Islamic Finance in Uganda and also pioneered the Islamic Finance conference in Uganda. He is currently engaging with Ministry of Finance over policy formulation for taxation of Islamic Finance specifically a diminishing Musharaka product. He has a keen interest in the development and evolution of Islamic finance and the entertainment law practice in Uganda.
He also handles insurance, privatization and de-regulation law, and all other aspects of commercial litigation. He has experience in advising international and local clients on commercial transactions and complex commercial litigation.
Under the International Lawyers for Africa (ILFA) Programme, in 2016, Ian was seconded to the global law firm of Latham and Watkins LLP in the UK in the International Tax and Project Finance Departments with a special emphasis on the African Market.
He is both Ugandan and UK trained and has over fourteen years of experience under his belt working at an audit firm and as an advocate at commercial law firms, with emphasis on tax practice.
Ian twice been nominated for the award of “Partner of the year” at the Africa Legal Awards, 2020 and 2021. He was also recognised amongst the 75 highly regarded business lawyers in Uganda. Ian is a licensed Insolvency Practitioner in Uganda.
